Cherwell Safer Communities Partnership
Street Wardens
The street warden scheme was originally set up in 2001 and since then the wardens have been the eyes and ears of the community and proven to be very successful and well accepted.
Street wardens play a major role in the new Neighbourhood Management Team.
They attend community meetings, forums, groups and assist with surveys to identify problem areas which can then be used to support Thames Valley Police (TVP) with information and intelligence.
Street wardens also carry out high visibility patrols with Police Community Support Officers (PCSO’s) who can also offer support and advice to the wardens in dealing with problems and issues.
How does it work?
As well as having strong links with various departments of the council, wardens also have links with other service providers. Below are just some of the responsibilities and duties of the street wardens:
-
Issuing Fixed Penalty Notices for litter and dog fouling offences
-
Report fly tipping, abandoned or untaxed vehicles and other waste related issues.
-
Promote recycling; give advice to residents about the ‘Blitz Team’ .
-
Assist the dog warden with stray dogs and other related issues
-
Wardens are trained & equipped to deal with needles & drugs related litter.
-
Assist Leisure Services to promote musical events. Wardens are also trained walk leaders for health walk schemes.
What can we expect?
A typical day for a warden could include any of the following:
-
Reporting and dealing with overgrown trees, hedges, blocked path & alley ways.
-
Contacting the relevant companies responsible for broken street lights, phone boxes, bus shelters, damaged or missing drain covers etc, gas & water leaks.
-
Check on vulnerable residents prone to unwanted or cold callers.
-
Give talks at local schools on litter, environmental issues, Safety (personal & road).
-
Graffiti removal.
-

Above are just a few of the issues and responsibilities the wardens face each day. To find out more, why not get in touch with your local wardens?
